The community of Portland Creek gets its name from Portland Creek River. Located just two kilometers north of the community this internationally recognized river is famous for its salmon and trout fishing. The mouth of the river is encompassed by white sand beaches, which extend to the highway and creates easy access for fisherpersons/tourists. Only 1.5 kilometers north of Portland Creek bridge visitors will find the entrance to Mountain Water Resort, a full service RV Park and Campground. This park has a long history of outdoor recreation and will let visitors experience excellent salmon and trout fishing.

Portland Creek has a beautiful view of the Gulf of St. Lawrence from its shoreline.

Community and business services for Portland Creek include a K-12 school, Holy Cross and a public library with public internet access – Community Access Centre (located 5 kms north in Daniel's Harbour). A number of fishing enterprises work out of Daniel's Harbour and their fishing stores/sheds are located near the breakwater that provides shelter for local fishing boats. In addition, recreational services that are available include a ballfield, community hall and community trail. Health care is provided in a local medical clinic with hospital services in Norris Point (105 kms south). Other community services include a post office and fire services. A small community, the residents of Portland Creek gets most of their business services from near by towns, i.e. Daniel's Harbour, Parsons Pond, Cow Head and St. Paul's.
