The name "Straitsview" implies a view of the nearby Strait of Belle Isle but the strait is visible only from the south-eastern extremity of the well-sheltered cove. Straitsview is about 2 kilometres Southeast of L'anse aux Meadows. The first known settlers were William Allingham and a person named Knockers. In the 1800's they relied mainly on the inshore cod fishery. Local landmark include Grandmother's Chair into the side of a rock by the ocean. Straitsview has a walking trail named Cape Raven Trail, which is also the most northern point for the International Appalachian Trail.
